Hon. Tania Vázquez Rivera

At the academic level, holds a bachelor's degree in Labor Relations from the University of Puerto Rico, Rio Piedras Campus and a Juris Doctor from the Inter-American University of Puerto Rico Law School. Career At the professional level, she has been practicing as a lawyer for 12 years. Prior to heading the Department of Natural and Environmental Resources and Environmental Quality Board, she worked in the private sector as a lawyer for multinational corporations and non-profit organizations.

During this time, she specialized in the practice of environmental, construction, administrative, corporate and contract laws. Prior to this, she worked in the Puerto Rico Infrastructure Finance Authority, (PRIFA), as Executive Deputy Director and Director of the Legal Department. As second in command of this agency, she was responsible for providing financial and administrative assistance and counseling to the Executive Director for the development and financing of infrastructure facilities on the island originated by public corporations, government agencies and municipalities. In addition to strategically leading the management of the $1.7 trillion construction program of the Authority.

As director of PRIFA's legal department, she provided legal advice on issues related to the environment, construction, administration and contracts, while supervising the 10-member department. At the Department of Natural and Environmental Resources, she served as Sub-Secretary, where she developed contract policies and procedures that resulted in a 70% improvement in efficiency and resource management.

She directly supervised the special aids’ work and managed the organization and logistics of over 1,000 employees. Prior to her appointment as Sub-Secretary, she led the Office of Legal Affairs, where she represented the Department in all legal matters, including judicial disputes, administrative procedures, permits and endorsements. In addition, she developed administrative policies and procedures of the Department, while supervising a team of 25 people. Currently serves as Secretary of the Department of Natural and Environmental resources, besides being the chief environmental adviser of the Governor of Puerto Rico, Hon. Ricardo Rosselló Nevares.
