Mr. Villamil has published extensively on development issues in small island systems. While a Visiting fellow at the Institute of Development Studies at the University of Sussex, he published a book on planning and development in small economies (in Spanish, Ediciones SIAP, Buenos Aires) and has lectured at a number of universities on the subject of small island’s economic development, including the Universidad de la Laguna in the Canary islands, the University of London, and various universities in Latin America.

He was the David Canegata memorial lecturer at the College of the Virgin islands where he lectured on “Size and Survival: the Economics of Small Island Systems”. He belonged to the Advisory Board of the Island Resources Foundation. Mr. Villamil was an Adviser to the ECLAC/UNEP project on environment and development and was responsible for producing the report on “Sustainable Development in the Caribbean”. He was also consulted on the development of the Balearic Islands’ Strategic Plan. Mr. Villamil received the prestigious John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowship for his work on small economies, is a former Professor of Planning in the University of Puerto Rico, and has been a visiting professor at a number of universities, including Harvard.
