Michael Laas is the Founding Partner of Sustainable Futures Group (SFG) - a consulting firm specializing in Sustainable Development, Green Building Practices, Sustainable Business Operations, Technology, and Resilience. SFG strives to be a collaborative consultancy that works with innovative organizations to build the next generation of sustainable projects and businesses.

Through his practice, Michael has worked with private equity, real estate developers, hoteliers, governments, non-profits, and technology companies to realize their sustainability goals and maximize their impact. More recently, his firm has consulted with the 100 Resilient Cities program, pioneered by the Rockefeller Foundation, on driving engagement around the efforts of Miami’s Resiliency Officers. Additionally, SFG has consulted with building data analytics company Entic to help scale their energy efficiency technology within Blackstone’s real estate portfolio and completed a comprehensive Environmental Social Governance (ESG) program for one of the most progressive and sustainable developers in Central America.

Prior to SFG, Michael worked as the Corporate Director for Sustainability and Impact at Starwood Capital’s Hospitality division, SH Group. In this role, he established sustainable design and operations standards for all new hospitality projects, including 1 Hotels. He also worked on identifying strategies to make real estate assets more resilient while improving operating income and value.

Michael holds a master’s degree in Civil and Environmental Engineering from the University of Miami, having worked for multidisciplinary engineering consulting firm Gannett Fleming for several years where he managed federal grants for the Florida Department of Transportation and developed numerous environmental impact statements for federally funded infrastructure projects.

A founder and active member of several environmentally focused non-profits, Michael is passionate about the environment, an avid waterman, and believes in the civic responsibility to better one’s community. Originally born in Puerto Rico but raised overseas, he frequently visits Puerto Rico and has deep desire to see the island flourish economically and culturally. Michael is an active member of the Urban Land Institute (ULI) and serves on the ULI Resilience Task Force for South Florida.
